Synthesis of Two Variables: Rural and Access to Mental Health Providers Annie N. Brown Duquesne University Synthesis of Two Variables: Rural and Access to Mental Health Providers Research requires the nursing scientists to explore the context of problems encountered. In order to identify targeted directions to hone efforts researchers must first identify the variables to be studied. The purpose of this paper is to synthesize the variables of Rural and Access to Mental Health Providers. Definition of Variables According to the United States Census Bureau (2017) rural is explained as a delineation of geographical areas identified by urban clusters of at least 2,500 people and less than 50,000 or urbanized areas of†¦show more content†¦Snowball sampling through the PCPs identified 8 sites meeting the inclusion criteria. The sites then identified patients with mental illness and family members who were willing to talk to researchers. The sample size was 44 which included a combination of patients and family members. A semi-structured interview process performed during group discussions were recorded, transcribed and analyzed by mental health professionals for coherent themes (Robinson et al, 2012). Five main themes were identified which included a perception of community stigma related to mental illness, physical limitations such as distance and cost affect access to care, perceived inadequate care solutions, unresolved coordination of care, and reliance o n family to aid in and deliver mental health care (Robinson et al, 2012). The second research article looked at rural Pennsylvania PCPs perceptions of caring for rural women with mental health complaints. Sampling was purposive using the American Medical Association Physician Masterfile to identify all physicians practicing in 28 RUCA zip codes labeled 1-6 (Colon-Gonzalez, McCall-Hosenfeld, Weisman, Hillemeier, Perry, Chuang, 2013). Such sampling identified 250 physicians with a final study sample size of 19 who participated in either phone or in person interviews.
